About

Theology for the everyday Christian.

Most Christians want to go deeper in God’s word. School of Theology exists to make that possible without the barriers of cost, time, or academic background.

“They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning, so that the people could understand what was being read.”

Nehemiah 8:8

Our story

Built out of a need we kept noticing.

Ten years ago, we realised that there were lots of people in our congregations who were hungry to engage with their faith and God’s word at a deeper level than Sunday mornings allowed. But formal theological education felt out of reach: either the level felt intimidating or the format felt too expensive and too time-consuming.

The question wasn’t whether people could handle big ideas. It was whether we could build something that removed the barriers.

School of Theology was the answer. It runs as a partnership between local churches and we see it as something that belongs to and serves the churches it comes from. For over a decade in Manchester we have been blessed to see hundreds of ordinary believers engaging with the whole sweep of Scripture and Christian teaching. In 2026 we launched a second base in the High Peak, and we are continuing to grow.

Who it’s for

You don’t need to be a ‘theology type’.
You just need to want to go deeper.

The people who come to School of Theology are ordinary believers from all walks of life, with all kinds of biblical backgrounds. What they share is a hunger to understand their faith more deeply and to grow as disciples.

The curious Christian
You love God’s word and want a bit more than a Sunday sermon can give. You have questions about the Bible, doctrine, and faith, and you want a space to explore them.
The church servant
You lead a home group, serve in children’s work, or preach occasionally. You want to be better equipped: more confident in the Bible and more theologically grounded.
The aspiring leader
You sense a calling toward ministry or teaching in the future. You want a foundation in Scripture and theology , but in a form that fits your life.
A typical session

One Saturday morning. Two teaching blocks. Real community.

Sessions run on Saturday mornings, 9:00am to 12:30pm, once a month across two years. Each morning follows a similar rhythm.

Teaching is delivered by a range of speakers, all of whom are asked to pitch their sessions for ordinary believers rather than academic audiences. Sessions include group discussions and exercises, plus time for Q&A, in addition to the teaching from the front.

Afterwards, we provide follow-up discussion questions that people can work through with others from their church group to help connect the teaching to their own context.

What we believe

United on the big issues.
Open-handed on secondary questions.

Manchester School of Theology is committed to the historic, orthodox Christian faith as revealed in Scripture and confessed by the Church through the centuries. The following represents the theological ground we hold in common, and within which all teaching at School of Theology takes place.

God
There is one God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who is holy, loving, utterly faithful, and worthy of all worship and trust.
Scripture
The Bible is the inspired and authoritative Word of God, through which the Holy Spirit speaks. It finds its centre and fulfilment in Jesus Christ.
Humanity and Sin
All people are made in the image of God and possess inherent dignity and worth. All have sinned and stand in need of his grace.
Jesus Christ
The eternal Son of God, truly divine and truly human. Born of the Virgin Mary, lived without sin, and through his teaching and miracles revealed the kingdom of God.
The Cross and Resurrection
Jesus died as an atoning sacrifice for sin, bearing its penalty in our place. He rose bodily from the dead, ascended to the Father, and now reigns in glory.
Salvation
Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. It was planned by the Father, accomplished by the Son, and is applied by the Spirit. This salvation is offered freely to all who repent and believe.
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is fully God and is personal. The Spirit is at work in the world to bring new life, lead people to repentance and faith, and empower the Church for witness and mission.
The Church
The church is the body of Christ, made up of all who trust in him across all times and places, and is locally expressed through gathered communities that are called to worship, discipleship, and mission.
Ethics
We hold to a traditional historical Christian ethic, including a biblical understanding of marriage as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman.
The Return of Christ
Jesus will return visibly and bodily, raise the dead, judge all people, and bring God’s purposes to completion in the renewal of all things.
On secondary issues

On matters beyond this shared foundation — including baptism, church governance, spiritual gifts, and other secondary questions — we recognise that faithful Christians may hold different views. We ask all who teach at the School to hold such differences with humility and generosity.
